Drape

Bright noon clouds.

At the end of a day,
I take off my memories
of the bright noon clouds
and drape them
across the chair
beside my bed.
I hope the joy of them
will hang in the air around me
while I sleep.
I unbutton my thoughts
of the creek rambling by
with its shadows and shine,
how it carried the perfume
it found upstream last week
from that wild gypsy rose
on the mountainside.
I remember
how the scent of it
reached my nose
with a lovely blend
of crushed petals
and tender rain tears.

I slip off that moment
when I couldn't look up
and stare directly
at the sun, but the sun
was so kind; it gazed up at me,
instead, from its mirror
in the pond.
With sleepy eyes, I realize
the vivid memory
of that brilliant sky
has left finger prints,
like wet paint, on
everything I've touched.
Maybe I shouldn't
have undressed these thoughts,
tossed them so carelessly
from my mind?
Perhaps I'll find myself
waking from sleep,
reaching in the dark,
putting them back on.
I'll cradle the fabric of them
against my chest, my
sky-stained fingers folded,
blue and vibrant,
into my palms.

One Stone

One stone.

I walk on this earth
one seeker of billions
and I wonder what it is
the ground has witnessed
what must it think
about the mess of us
as we trample
our way across it

Each sharp pebble
each smooth stone
how does its story change
when a human hand
picks it up and skips it
across the river
taking it
from its home

Can it breathe
when it sinks
to the bottom
does it feel
abandoned and alone
or is it a new path
to freedom
from what it has known

Does it become broken
or does it fall unharmed
to the river's floor
do its colors become richer
beneath the water
does it dig itself in
become undercover
avoiding the others

Did it leave
a small piece of itself
behind on solid ground
are other rocks
waiting there
with broken hearts
keeping its place warm
wanting it back home

I walk on this earth
I'm just like those rocks
I trample across
one stone among billions
and Life
is the random pick
the quick flick
of that human hand.

Poetry: Wings

Robin’s egg.

Flocks of avian beings fly
in rows of breathing ribs
that soar across the sky.
Sometimes a feather falls
as an offering,
down, down to the grass
and I, the lucky soul
who walks by to find it.
A starling whirrs by
in a feathery blur
that smells
of earthworms and rivers.
A heron whooshes above me
and I can almost hear
the babbling creek
inside his beak
as a fish flops
in his mouth,
its scales so luminescent
I swear I can hear those, too,
because shimmer
should have a sound.

I wonder why birds flying
can bring me to tears.
I yearn to be
orioled, finched, wrenned
like they are.
The wings are the thing.
They remind me of angels,
those unseen beings I believe in.
I think these thoughts
as I walk without wings.
Sometimes in my dreams
I am one of them,
willing myself to take flight,
if only for a few moments.
But, on this morning
I walk down a sidewalk
across earth's timeline.
I spy
a delicate, blue egg,
fallen and cracked,
its world shattered
on the gravel of a man-made road.

I wrote this poem on my walk the other day...discovering the cracked egg gave me the perfect way to end it. Thank goodness for the Notes feature on my iPhone - I was stopping constantly to write down my thoughts. Thanks so much for stopping by.

The Air Up There

sun star

SWAY

I flee to a field of poppies
knee deep in ruby stalks, and
the breeze swirls their songs
through the soul of me.
Soft, murmuring melodies
float through me to the sky
into breadths of blue and
puffs of billowy clouds.
I want to hide here
forever, I whisper, and
I sway with the rhythm
of the stems, while the bees
suckle harmonies
from rouge petal cups
and velvety stamens.

Ah, the beauty of nature and the elements. Noticing them in the quiet is as soothing as music. Flowers, wind, sky...and to look at those skies, to really let them soak in, is so peaceful. My lungs open up and my sense of awe kicks in like magic...there's a momentary escape. Soft, murmuring melodies float through me to the sky, into breadths of blue and puffs of billowy clouds.

Yesterday I was standing in my back yard and happened to look up. This was the view that greeted me, and I ran for my camera. There were also tons of starlings swooping all around, and some enormous dragonflies buzzing through and hovering. I tried to capture them with my camera but they were too fast. That's OK - this photo I got showed how amazing the view was.

I wrote this poem several years back - I was revisiting some of my old poetry yesterday and came upon it. I had forgotten all about it - it's a nice feeling to stumble upon an older poem and still feel pretty happy about how it turned out. That isn't always the case. I thought I'd share it today because it goes well with my sky photo (and my current poem is still under construction).

Thanks so much for stopping by. I will be linking this blog post up with Poets United, a wonderful place to visit for some poetry. Please have a look HERE. I'm also honored to have some of my photography featured there this morning!

The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn't it be? — it is the same the angels breathe. ~Mark Twain

Wordless Wednesday: Landscape

Marsh pines

It is only a little planet, but how beautiful it is. ~Robinson Jeffers

Hmmm, Wordless Wednesday...it's hard not to say any words? And I can't not include a quote with my photo - it's impossible.

This image was initially taken with my iPhone and processed with apps. But I moved it into PSE this morning and edited it further, cropping it, putting it in Radlab, sharpening the pines, blurring the sky a bit...it was good to practice my very rusty Photoshop Elements skills. It's been awhile!

Thank you for stopping by - Happy Hump Day to you.

When in Doubt, Just Jump Back In

Florida sunset

The day is ending. It’s time for something that was beautiful to turn into something else that is beautiful. Now, let go. ~Elizabeth Gilbert

Hello, Blog World...it's been months since I've posted. I guess the only solution is to just jump right back in.

Living in Florida is fantastic. The weather is truly amazing. We left a gray winter landscape in Virginia, and exchanged them for vast blue skies and vibrant flowers everywhere. It's still surreal for me. Now I just need to get my creative groove back. Life has been so busy with the move since last October. I feel like this is an opportunity for me to begin anew with all things creative. I don't quite know yet which direction I'll go in, but I will let go and enjoy the process.

For now, I'm sharing a photo I took of a sunset last week. The sunsets here are as varied as the trees were in Virginia...every night there's a new surprise in the sky to awe me. The colors and clouds are magnificent. For this image, I used Kim's "Cora" texture at Multiply/25%. I also put the photo into Radlab to tweak it. I was very rusty with my Photoshop skills - it's been months since I've edited photos on my big computer. It felt good!

Thank you for stopping by. I hope to get back on track with my blog. Happy Tuesday to you!

Rhythm of the Seasons

Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night; and thus he would never know the rhythms that are at the heart of life. ~Hal Borland

Hubby and I drove to the Virginia countryside last weekend and I got so many great photos...there's just something about back country roads, especially with autumn showing its presence! I love it when we drive down a random road and stumble upon a gorgeous landscape...it's so incredibly quiet. There's no traffic sounds...just the songs of birds, or silence. What a wonderful moment it is to experience this...so good for the soul.

I'm sharing a few for Friday Finds. Today, I'm going to Williamsburg, VA for a weekend trip and hope to have some more great fall images. I can't wait to share when I get back! Thanks for stopping by.

The red leaves take the green leaves’ place, and the landscape yields. We go to sleep with the peach in our hands and wake with the stone, but the stone is the pledge of summers to come. ~Emily Dickinson

The colors of fall make my heart beat faster...so, so beautiful. In the mum photo above, I used Kim's "cora" texture at Multiply/20%. So many autumn photos, so little time! I hope your world is filled with color, wherever you are. Thank you for stopping by!

The Beginnings of Autumn

You don’t have to go looking for pictures. The material is generous. You go out and the pictures are staring at you. ~Lee Friedlander

Nature makes it very easy...especially in October. The challenge becomes picking a few favorites out of the hundreds of photos I'm taking. That's not a bad problem to have...these are a few from last week when the trees were barely starting to turn. They're getting much more vibrant with each passing day! More to come - have a wonderful weekend.

Decorate Your Own Soul

wild daisies

wild daisies

wild daisies

After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul, and you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning and company doesn’t mean security, and you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts and presents aren’t promises, and you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child, and you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans. After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much. So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure…that you really are strong, and you really do have worth. ~Veronica A. Shoffstall

Being out in nature with my camera offers me much joy and comfort as I adjust to my daughter's move to New York City...my heart aches a little, but I also know I'll be OK. I like that age and wisdom give us the tools to plant our own gardens and decorate our own souls. When I feel sad or down, I let it flow through me and then I carry on. I go out in search of my own flowers, and when I find them my soul smiles and I feel so grateful. Gratefulness is the key to life.

These little daisy-like flowers are everywhere right now - maybe they're just weeds, but to me they're absolutely beautiful. So cheery and bright!

Thank you for stopping by - in the final image above, I used Kim's "mere" texture at Soft Light/20%.

Green Joy

sunlight and green

Plants cry their gratitude for the sun in green joy. ~Terri Guillemets

Soon everything will explode into brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges, but for now I'm basking in the last of the summer green-glow. These images represent all I'm feeling emotionally right now: oh-so-grateful for the sun on my face, overwhelmed with the beauty of the green, sad to see it go, excitedly anticipating the change of color that's coming...I feel a jumble of both joy and sadness that creates an overflowing heart lined with a soft sadness.

My daughter officially moves to The Big Apple tomorrow...autumn is the perfect season for her to leave, because the feelings of fall perfectly match my real life emotions. Her new life in NYC makes me very happy for her...what an exciting, new path she's on. And I will look forward to visiting the city! But it's also a bit sad and bittersweet as I adjust to her living far away. Life is constant change, just like nature's seasons. The secret to life is how we adapt to it...and thank goodness for Facebook, texting and Skype! My daughter will be hearing from me quite often. :)

How is fall coming along where you are? Bask in the beauty of it!

There is Something in the Autumn

fall leaf

There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood –
Touch of manner, hint of mood;
And my heart is like a rhyme,
With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.
~Bliss Carman

Well, that quote is absolutely perfect to describe how I feel about fall...so I think I'll just tiptoe out of here with my rhyming heart, put on my flannel scarf and fall boots, and continue my search for beautiful, October colors! And if you happen to see me out there, just ignore the foam mustache from my Starbucks Salted Caramel Mocha, OK? :)

Happy autumn, everyone.

(I used Kim's Anna texture at Multiply/30% for my image.)

Fall Fungi

The jewel is the awaring presence, not the object being seen. That’s why we can be bored and disappointed while gazing at the Swiss Alps and ecstatic and blissed out over a crumpled cigarette package in the gutter. The beauty is in the quality of the seeing, the awareness, the presence, not in the object being seen. ~Joan Tollifson

I'm never bored while on the hunt for pretty mushrooms! They can be very elusive, so you definitely have to be 'present' while looking for them. I think the mushrooms may have peaked in my area, though...now that the temps are cooling down, I'm not seeing as many. Here are a few I've stumbled upon in the last few weeks. I will continue my search for the month of October - maybe I'll get lucky and find a few while out enjoying the fall foliage.

I'm trying to get back into a blog routine...October is the prettiest month of the year, so I'll definitely be blogging the autumn colors! Thanks so much for stopping by.

A Little Sunshine

Untitled

Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life. And everyone deserves a little sunshine. ~Jeffrey Glassberg

And on that note, I'm taking a two week hiatus from my blog as I head down south to enjoy some Florida sunshine. Back soon! :)

Little Bits of Life

little bits of life

little bits of life

little bits of life

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
And can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
~Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)

This week's Song-ography prompt is Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It moves me to tears when I hear it...especially as I get a bit older. The lyrics are profound...and of course, after seeing them up above, the song is officially stuck in my head and I'm singing it out loud as I compose this blog post. :)

I'm so incredibly grateful to photography. It has comforted me and given me such joy these last four years as I adjust to the different seasons of my life. It's one of the few hobbies I have stuck with. I have so much love and passion for it...it takes me outside myself and reminds me there's a whole world of miracles out there for those who will notice. It gives me something to look forward to every day, even through the landslides. Whether I'm having an up day or a down day, I can go outside with my camera and feel peace while I seek out something alive in nature. It's there waiting every moment of every day - little bits of beauty and life. We just have to look.

Please click HERE and visit Kathy's blog for this week's Song-ography prompt - she has such a gift for writing, and her post this week is very moving.

Floral Notes

summer flowers

And the days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I have really good days. ~Ray Wylie Hubbard

A beautiful quote and a pretty flower photo...two things I love. Going in search of photos with my camera is one of the things I'm most grateful for. And collecting quotes is also something that brings me so much pleasure...I have thousands of them saved on my computer. I can't help myself! :)

For my flower image I used Kim's "Touch-of-1" texture which is probably my favorite...I use it a lot because it's so subtle and creamy. I also put my photo into Radlab to tweak it a little further.

More Magical Mushrooms

Well, I have a new hobby...my neighbors must think I'm crazy. Everyday now I wander my yard with my camera looking for pretty mushrooms. Someone observing from a distance must think it very strange to see some lady wandering around her yard staring at the grass! I hope I don't become known as the Mushroom Whisperer.

I'm sharing part two of my mushroom photos - it's been fascinating to see how quickly they appear from one night to the next, and also how quickly they disappear! There haven't been as many this past week, but we also haven't had as much rain and humidity. I will continue my mushroom treasure hunt and hopefully share more photos as I find them.

Also, in my last post I shared an image of two reddish mushrooms (click HERE to see that post). As they decomposed, they turned jet black - I'm sharing that image up above.

And the spiked mushroom I found looks like a real rebel in the fungi world - if it were a person, it would be pierced, tatted, and listening to heavy metal!

For my blurred mushroom photo, I used Kim Klassen's "Cora" texture at Multiply/38%, which helped darken the photo just right. I actually kind of liked how the mushroom blurred and the sharp blades of grass came into focus. I completely planned that... :)
